Whakatāne Rotary Club’s environmental committee is holding a planting and clearing day on Saturday – with all volunteers welcome.

The Rotary club, along with Interact members from Whakatāne High School, will be at the reserve adjacent to Otao Reserve at Port Ōhope, across the road from Elizabeth Street, from 9am.

Spokesman Richard Underwood said Rotary and Interact members had previously planted about 300 native trees at the reserve and planned to plant another 200 at the working bee, as well as clear weeds around the existing plantings.

All the trees have been supplied by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council over the past 10 years, with their land management officer Jack Revington on hand to assist.

“This planting day will complete a strip right to the mown grass area of the Otao reserve, near where the Rotary-initiated Ohiwa harbour walk/cycleway is located,” Underwood said.

“Any volunteers should bring gloves and a spade and water.”

Rotary and the Interact club will be involved in another planting day down the Ohiwa spit past the boat launch ramp on September 20.

Along with Halo and Trees for Survival volunteers, they will add to existing plantings.

Public participation in this event is also welcome.
