The Have a Heart Community Store transformed from its usual pre-loved retail space into an intimate fashion runway on Monday, with all 50 seats filled for the One Year Re-Open Fashion Show Celebration.

The sold-out event celebrated more than fashion. It marked one year since the reopening of the store and recognised the impact the Have a Heart Charitable Trust continues to have within the Whakatāne community through kindness, sustainability and practical support.

Master of ceremonies Céleste de Haas guided guests through the afternoon as volunteer models confidently walked the red carpet wearing a collection of pre-loved clothing available from the community store.

There was plenty of laughter, applause and encouragement as familiar faces of all ages and backgrounds showcased that confidence and style can be found in every wardrobe.

Guests were welcomed by Chris Barnard from the Have a Heart Charitable Trust, who reflected on the organisation’s journey over the past year.

He spoke about how the future of the community store had once been uncertain, before Anja Kleinschmidt, Have a Heart community store manager, stepped in and helped transform it into a thriving community hub.

Today, the store supports a number of community initiatives and provides practical assistance for local individuals and whānau.

One of the afternoon’s highlights was the presentation of a $500 donation to the Have a Heart Charitable Trust, with the funds going towards supporting the Merritt Street Food Hub and the important work it does within the community.

Though the fashion show was the main attraction, it was the people behind the scenes who made the event special. Volunteers were everywhere, dressing the models, welcoming guests, serving refreshments and ensuring everything ran smoothly.

It was inspiring to see so many people giving their time, whether they had been part of Have a Heart for years or had simply stepped forward to support the organisation and its mission.

One particularly memorable moment was seeing a volunteer model wearing a beautiful vintage outfit that had been lovingly cared for within another volunteer’s family for many years before being donated to the store.

Watching the treasured top and skirt make their return to the runway was a touching reminder that every donated item has a story, and through Have a Heart those stories continue while creating new memories for someone else.

The celebration was made possible thanks to the generosity of local sponsors and supporters, including Chris Ford Events, The Corner Kitchen, Willow May Preloved, Koha Tai, Meu Hairdressers, Céleste de Haas, RENAskin, Ōhope Beach Escapes, Blue Flame Studio and Hair at Home with Nanichen. RENAskin also generously donated a prize.

As the afternoon came to a close, there was a genuine sense of pride throughout the room.

The event was not only a celebration of one successful year, but also a celebration of the volunteers, supporters, sponsors and community members who continue to stand behind the Have a Heart Charitable Trust.

It was a reminder that when a community comes together with generosity, compassion and purpose, incredible things can happen.
