Eastern Bay residents are invited to join Alzheimers Eastern Bay of Plenty’s Memory Walk on Sunday, raising awareness of dementia mate wareware during World Alzheimer’s Month.
The walk starts at 10.30am outside Whakatāne Library, following the Warren Cole Walkway. Bring gold coins for the barbecue and raffles. This year’s message is “the earlier you know, the more you can do”. Early diagnosis can provide clarity, access to support and time for people and whānau to plan for the future.
Alzheimers Eastern Bay manager Sue Cave said stigma and low awareness could prevent people seeking help when they noticed changes in memory, thinking or behaviour.
“A diagnosis can make a real difference. It can help answer questions about what is happening and open the door to the right care, information, and community support,” she said.
Almost 83,000 people are living with dementia mate wareware in New Zealand in 2025, with numbers expected to increase.
People taking part in the walk can collect their walk T-shirts from the Alzheimers Eastern Bay of Plenty office before the event or on the day.
For information, contact Alzheimers EBOP on 07 308 0525 or speak with the team at the walk.
