Just under 400 trees have been recently planted at the Ōhiwa Spi,t thanks to the efforts of Eastern Bay organisations.

Whakatāne Rotarians and members of Halo and the Ōhiwa Spit Planting group came together on September 20 to continue planting in the area east of the Ōhope Golf Club.

“There were just under 400 trees to be added to the area that the spit care group and Halo had been planting over the previous four years and this was completed in just under two hours, thanks in no small part to the use of a battery-powered auger funded by Trust Horizon,” said Rotary spokesman Richard Underwood.

“The auger drilled all the holes in the pre-prepared and mown strips, saving much hard work as the ground was very hard.”

It was the final planting of the season and finished with a sausage sizzle for volunteers.

“We encourage members of the public to take a leisurely stroll down the spit to view the great work that has been done,” Underwood said.

“The planting season has come to an end now and it is hoped that the Rotary club and the other groups can combine in the future to do more plantings.”
