Ōpōtiki will once again come alive with sport, whanaungatanga and community spirit this weekend as the Muriwai Tournament brings whānau, marae, hapū and pā together for another annual celebration.

The long-running tournament will be getting under way tomorrow with a day focused on rangatahi and tamariki.

The free Rangatahi and Tamariki Day will be held at Ōpōtiki Memorial Park, with registrations from 9am and activities under way at 10am.

Young people will represent their marae, hapū and pā in a range of sports and activities, with the emphasis on participation, connection and having fun.

Organisers will also use the day to gather ideas from the community about the future of rangatahi involvement in the Muriwai Tournament.

The tournament continues on Friday afternoon with senior mixed basketball at Ōpōtiki College Hall from 4.30pm to 9pm, providing another opportunity for whānau and supporters to get behind their pā.

Saturday will see the tournament move into its senior competitions, with play beginning from 8am at Ōpōtiki Memorial Park and Ōpōtiki Rugby Club.

Senior rugby, netball and mixed netball will feature throughout the day, building towards the senior finals.

The Muriwai Mākete will also be running throughout the weekend, with local kai vendors, stalls and community groups setting up stalls for the weekend.

With generations of whānau having taken part in the tournament, organisers are encouraging the community to get behind their teams and make the most of a weekend centred on sport, connection and whanaungatanga.
