Whakatāne District Council is holding drop-in sessions next week where people can provide feedback on the draft Awakeri Structure Plan.
Awakeri has been identified as a priority growth area because of its location, proximity to state highways, existing community facilities and comparatively lower natural hazard and climate risk.
Two drop-in sessions will be held at the Awakeri Events Centre on Wednesday, October 7 and Thursday, October 8, between 5pm and 7pm, where people can view the draft structure plan and talk to the project team.
Community feedback is sought across five focus areas, including water and environment, recreation and public amenities, transport and movement, growth and new homes and identity of Awakeri.
Growth manager Daniel Smith said community feedback was an important part of the process.
“The draft structure plan is about planning ahead so that if growth happens in the future, it is coordinated, well-considered and reflects what matters most to the Awakeri community.
“We’ve heard strong support for protecting the village feel of Awakeri, its character and natural environment.
“We’ve also heard concerns about issues such as flooding, drainage, traffic and infrastructure. This engagement is an opportunity for people to review the draft structure plan, tell us what they support and identify anything they think needs further consideration.”
