Great showing for end-of-season harrier run

.

There was a tremendous turnout for the final run of the season for the Whakatane Harrier Club.

Almost 30 runners competed in three separate pack runs over Onekawa Regional Park, starting at the Bryans Beach end.

Whakatāne Harriers club captain Peter Blackwood was ecstatic, with this “one of the best showings for a final run of the season in a decade. The wonderful views added to a great afternoon.”

Thank you Theresa Gee for organising the three courses and packs and Bailey Hill, coming back from injury, for handing out the goodies at the summit – what a challenging climb.

The runs varied in length from the 2.1-kilometre return to the pa site through to 6.3km.

The only race was the juniors with Jesse Hughes speeding to be clearly in front, followed by very good runs from Keely and Nevaya Henderson.

There was also great running on the steep terrain by Parker Shaw and Toby Cairns in the longer pack runs and Enzo Cairns, Elor Hughes and Harley and Zara Campbell in the 2.1km.

The club now moves into the children’s and senior athletics.

A huge number of juniors competed in the opening day for Children’s Athletics this week on Tuesday, October 13.

The seniors compete on Wednesdays, with both clubs recommending to arrive 5pm-5.15pm for a prompt start at 5.30pm. It will be a different 5.20pm start for the children’s 800m and 1500m on October 28 and November 4.

The club is hosting the WaikatoBOP Children’s Ribbon Day on November 7.
