Just imagine driving into Whakatāne and seeing an amazing 6-metre-tall contemporary kiwi made of Corten steel that offers longevity, welcoming one and all.
I have heard of the kiwi project – aimed at creating an icon representing our Whakatāne community.
We are meant to be the Kiwi Capital of the World, so what an amazing representation of this.
I wholeheartedly support the evolution of this project.
Art is in the eye of the beholder, and all will have varying views.
As a newcomer to this community, I see the sculpture as being a way of unifying community, celebrating local identity, enhancing our public space, having cultural significance, being a tourist attraction and offering educational opportunities.
I look forward to seeing this creation come to fruition as I identify as a Kiwi, and in this case, a 6-metre Corten steel icon would be symbolic for me.
