The Eastern Bay of Plenty Kayak Fishing Club headed to the Ōpōtiki breakwater last Sunday for its monthly club competition.

Ten fishermen took part, enjoying perfect conditions and great fishing with a variety of fish caught. Star of the day was Stace Lewer who bagged two large snapper just under the club’s 60cm maximum takeable size.

Lewer won the snapper competition with a 3.8-kilogram fish with Jeff Symonds’ 2.8kg snapper taking second and Tom Murphy third with his 2.68kg catch.

In the kahawai section, Greg Burnett took top spot with a 1.87kg fish, second place went to Nic Twaddle, 1.45kg, and third to Garry Turner with a 1.39kg fish.

Murphy won the gurnard category with a 0.73kg catch, second went to Lewer, 0.67kg, with Blair Simonsen rounding out the top three with a 0.57kg catch.

The sole winner in the trevally section was Simonsen with a 0.98kg catch.

The club’s next event is an away fishing weekend at Maraehako from November 13 to 15.
