In response to those who don’t like the current design of the kiwi.
Art has always been in the eye of the beholder. To get a majority “like” on a piece of art is impossible. Over time the abstract kiwi will grow on us. It will be a talking point and a photoshoot point.
The metal will be lasting. The artist is a Kiwi himself. The cost is from donations. David Poole has put a great idea together to promote Whakatane and help bring people to the district with another tourist attraction. Around NZ there are a lot of towns with large art pieces.
I went to the open meeting, which was advertised, to see and hear the idea. I was also unsure of the Kiwi abstract but have for a long time felt town needs a large Kiwi. There was a small duplicate kiwi there (in the metal) and it was, very cool. Perhaps if more people had come along, they might have got a better idea on the concept. The cost was also advised.
