Coastguard Whakatāne is offering a boating safety skills and confidence-boosting workshop, in conjunction with a free open day, to be held between 10am and 3pm on Sunday.
President Nilesh Dahya says the “Suddenly in Charge” workshop is designed for those who are often on a boat, but usually with someone else at the helm.
“What would you do if, for whatever reason, things went pear-shaped out on the water and you suddenly found yourself in charge?
“Coastguard volunteers will help you gain essential boat-handling and safety know-how and practical guidance for emergency situations.
“You will be helped to feel more capable on the water, with improved confidence to step up if you’re suddenly the one in charge.
“Participants will move between learning stations in their own time and collect stamps at each stop.
“Those completing the workshop will be entered into a draw for a chance to win some great prizes.”
Topics covered will include lifejacket use and how to fit them correctly; VHF calls; how to do an emergency call; safe bar crossings; locator beacons; flare use; and basic boating knowledge.”
The workshop is free, but a koha would be appreciated. While not necessary, it is best to register your interest to secure your place by calling 07 308 7110.
For the open day, Coastguard Whakatāne’s boat shed, located at the boat ramp car park, and their rescue vessels will be open to the public.
Their Radio Communications Centre and training room, at The Heads car park, will also be open.
Children will be able to use VHF radios to be taught correct radio procedures.
Rides on Whakatane Rescue II will be available for a gold coin donation.
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council will be there with information on safe boating, by-laws and the new lifejacket rules. They will also have giveaways.
A barbecue sausage sizzle, kids colouring-in activity sheets and raffles with great prizes top off what will be a fun day out for the family.
